The George Hamilton
The George Hamilton, located at the corner of King Street West and Bay Street North, was demolished in April 2026, bringing an end to one of Hamilton’s most historic hospitality properties.
The 160-year-old pub and brewery permanently closed in February 2025 due to rising post-pandemic operating costs and declining foot traffic following the relocation of the Hamilton Bulldogs and the closure of FirstOntario Centre. The site was later purchased by the Vrancor Group, which received city approval to demolish the aging three-storey building. Developers stated that preserving and repurposing the structure was not financially feasible due to its age and condition.
A new development is planned for the property, featuring a restaurant and a modern 12-storey boutique hotel.
The closure and demolition marked the end of an era for a building widely regarded as one of Hamilton’s oldest continuously operating inns and taverns. Dating back to the 1860s, the property has been home to numerous well-known establishments over the decades, including Hamilton House, The Florence, The Palm, The Fairchild, the Regal Hotel, 4 Buck Saloon, and Cottage Living, before becoming The George Hamilton.
For generations, the landmark served as a gathering place in downtown Hamilton and remained a recognizable piece of the city’s hospitality and entertainment history.
